📋 This Week at a Glance
-
Rain helped Oklahoma, but Arkansas got drier. Exceptional drought (D4) in Oklahoma fell from 16.6% to 7.2% of the state. In Arkansas it nearly tripled, from 6.6% to 19.4%. Kansas improved too, and Missouri slipped a little. (US Drought Monitor)
-
Calves are bringing more money. OKC West called steer calves $10 to $20 higher on Tuesday. Joplin had 8,057 head Monday, with four-weight steers up to $540/cwt. Dodge City had steers over 700 lb $20 higher on Wednesday. (USDA AMS 1281, AMS 1245, AMS 1889)
-
Wheat is running late in Oklahoma and Kansas. Oklahoma was 37% planted on Oct 18 (5-year average 59%). Kansas was 60% (average 69%). (USDA NASS Crop Progress)
-
Burn bans: 146 Texas counties and 4 Oklahoma counties have one. Arkansas reported 50 counties on Oct 15. Kansas and Missouri set bans county by county. Details are below.
-
On the rodeo side: OHSRA and AHSRA Star City entries close Friday, Oct 23. Missouri High School Rodeo entries for Humansville close Monday, Oct 26, at 9 PM. The WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo is Nov 12 to 15 in Amarillo.

Close to home:
-
Pittsburg County, OK (McAlester): All of the county is in moderate drought, and 31% is in severe.
-
Washington County, AR (Fayetteville/Springdale): 99% is in extreme drought.
-
Wise County, TX (Decatur): Only abnormally dry now. It was rated moderate drought a week ago.
-
Cowley County, KS (Winfield/Arkansas City): 83% is in moderate drought.
-
Jasper County, MO (Joplin/Carthage): All of the county is in moderate drought, and 89% is in severe.
What happened: A storm on Oct 13 to 15 dropped 6 to 8 inches in spots west of Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City recorded 4.99 inches by late afternoon on Oct 14. The southeastern Texas Panhandle got 3 to 5 inches. Arkansas missed out. The Drought Monitor says extreme drought expanded across northern Arkansas and exceptional drought developed in southern Arkansas. Fire-danger readings (KBDI) reached 700 to 800 in parts of the state. (USDM weekly summary, South region)
Next 5 days and beyond: The forecast calls for heavy rain, 3 to 5 inches, from West Texas and the Panhandle into the Oklahoma Panhandle. The lower Mississippi Valley looks dry. The Oct 26 to 30 outlook leans wet for western Texas and dry from the lower Mississippi Valley northeast. (USDM summary, citing WPC and CPC · CPC 6 to 10 day outlook)
Why Texas is hoping for winter rain: Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon says this El Niño is "almost as strong as an El Niño can get." Strong El Niños have usually meant a wet October through February. AgriLife's Ronnie Schnell warns that recent rain is "surface, so it's not deep moisture." (AgriLife Today, Oct 20)
Missouri hay country is split. USDA's Missouri hay reporter says "North of the Missouri River conditions are generally good while south is far from anything good," with some exceptional drought showing up in the south. (AMS 2929)
🔥 Burn Bans
-
Oklahoma: County burn bans are in effect in Cotton, Haskell, McCurtain and Sequoyah counties. There is no statewide ban. The map was updated Oct 20. (Oklahoma Forestry Services burn ban map)
-
Texas: 146 counties have bans as of 10:08 AM on Oct 22. That includes the rodeo counties of Wise (Decatur), Parker (Weatherford), Tarrant (Fort Worth), Young (Graham), Hopkins (Sulphur Springs), and Potter and Randall (Amarillo). (Texas A&M Forest Service list)
-
Kansas and Missouri: Neither state keeps one statewide burn-ban list. Bans are set by county commissions and fire districts, so call your county or check its website before you burn. (Kansas Forest Service · Missouri Dept. of Conservation)
-
Arkansas: On Oct 15, the state Department of Agriculture reported burn bans in 50 counties, with 25 counties at extreme wildfire risk. It reminds haulers: "ensure trailer safety chains do not drag." (AR Dept. of Agriculture · current county map)

*The Texas summary has no single clean 7-weight line, so it's left out instead of being estimated.
Why fewer cattle? OSU's Derrell Peel says Oklahoma auction volume since July 1 is down 23.2% from a year ago, about 78,000 fewer head, even with poor pastures. "Perhaps larger auction runs are coming yet this fall…or maybe the cattle just aren't there." (OSU Cow-Calf Corner, Oct 12)

🏡 Ranch Life: one thing worth doing this week
Before you haul cull cows, think about their condition. OSU beef nutrition specialist Paul Beck worked the numbers at current cull-cow prices. A cow sold at body condition score 8 instead of BCS 4 was worth over $450 more, from both added weight and a better grade. Going from an extremely thin BCS 2 to BCS 8 added nearly $700. With wheat pasture finally greening up, a few weeks of gain before selling can pay. (OSU Cow-Calf Corner, Oct 12)
Watch for pasture mealybug. Texas AgriLife reports that feeding has slowed in South and Southeast Texas, but the pest is still present. King Ranch bluestem that was hit earlier is coming back in some patches and dying out in others. (AgriLife Today, Oct 20)

Wheat is behind in OK, AR and KS, on pace in TX and a bit ahead in MO. For the week ending Oct 18, wheat planted vs. the 5-year average was Oklahoma 37% vs. 59%, Arkansas 24% vs. 33%, Texas 64% vs. 64%, Kansas 60% vs. 69% and Missouri 41% vs. 38%. Wheat emerged in Oklahoma was 18% vs. 36%, and in Kansas 30% vs. 43%. (USDA NASS Crop Progress, Oct 19)

Texas crops: In West Central Texas, roughly 90% of the cotton in some areas was taken out for insurance. Stocker steers sold $3 to $10 higher and feeder steers $6 to $8 higher. In the Rolling Plains, 1 to 8 inches of rain filled stock tanks but "came too late to help cotton and other summer crops." (Texas Crop & Weather Report, Oct 20)

Arkansas grain: A low Mississippi River raises barge freight costs and weakens local corn and soybean basis. University of Arkansas research found that Arkansas producers are among the most exposed. (UADA, Oct 21)
